emac fails when putting to sleep

Hi,
I hope I do not ask a question about a well know problem.

My emac (G4 1.25Mhz) has become lately erratic when I put him in sleep mode.
If I wake him up the CRT will bang with a sound like a degauss and the
power is down.
Pressing the power button will not work until I have disconnected the
Power cord and wait 10-20 sec.

I tried some google search but could not find any reports about this
problem (or searched for the wrong keywords)

Could it be a problem with the prom battery?
Or is my power module defect?

Thanks for your help

Hi,
hope this is the right group to ask.

My eMac (G4,1.25Mhz,750MB RAM) will go into sleep mode but when I
press a button on the keyboard the CRT will sound like a degauss and
the power is off.
Pressing the power button will not boot until I unplug the power
cord , wait 10-20 sec and reinsert it.

I tried to google but could not find anything (maybe googled the wrong
keyword)

Could it be a problem with the pram battery? Power Unit? else?

Hope someone has seen this effect an can tell me what to do.

Thanks,
eMac insomnia

I just bought a new eMac a week ago (I've installed all the software updates),
and it has trouble going to sleep. It seems like it DIDN'T have this problem
when I first got it! In any case, it properly goes to sleep if I choose "Sleep"
from the Apple menu, but if I simply leave the computer idle, the screen goes
dark but the hard drive keeps running.

Is there something crucial in the Energy Saver preferences which is off? If so,
I can't imagine what. Or this is some sort of Tiger bug?

I trashed the System/Finder preferences, just to see if that would help. It
didn't.

Shut Down Problem

Hi,

I'm on a 700Mhz G4 eMac with 10.4.1. Ever since I got
10.4.1 I can't properly Shut Down. It won't go all the way
off. A message comes on in several languages saying I must
restart the computer by holding down the power button for
several seconds. When I restart and log back in a get a
message that says the OSX quit unexpectedly (I guess
improperly). The report to send to Apple says that it's an
"Unresolved kernel trap"

Any suggestions?

This didn't happen with 10.4. 10.4.1 has had mor spinning
beach ball, too.

Boot up with 10.4 DVD and do an Archive and Install
(re-installing Tiger)?

or Boot up with 10.4 DVD and run Disk Utility on Hard Drive?
When my eMac goes to sleep, it won't come back from a black screen. If I
restart, it comes up ok, but when it times out, it won't wake again. If I
go to the preferences panel and select screensaver, the pref panel crashes.
Another oddity, the titlebar clock stops at 3:01 Friday. The control panel
clock keeps running, and sometime over the weekend, it fixes itself and
Monday AM when I come in the titlebar clock is ok again.
Any ideas?

Just got a new emac to replace an iMac 400. The kids are having trouble with
AIM instant messaging. When the eMac goes to sleep it knock AIM off the
internet. When Aim awakens it signs back on but has missed any messages her
friends have sent her. Is there anyway short of not putting the machine sleep
to keep her signed on?

Another question, how much more power will the eMac use with just the display
and HD sleeping with out putting the eMac to sleep?

Thanks for any information.
eMac convert to 220 V ?

I have a recent eMac (1.25 GHz ATI) bought in the US. Coming back to
Europe, I sadly discovered (at the very last second!) that it does NOT
have a switching power supply. Right now it is running on a 220-110 V
transformer, but I would rather get rid of that.

I have got hold of the Apple Service Guide for my model, which says:

"The display/analog (service module) contains a non-switching power
supply which is preset at a 220V configuration. The voltage selection
is manually set by way of a voltage jumper. This means if you are
replacing the display/analog assembly and you will be operating the
computer in a 110V environment, you will have to install the voltage
jumper on the module. "

Detailed instructions follow. It is however unclear to me whether that
is a separate supply for the video circuitry, or indeed the master
supply for the whole system. In doubt, I am nervous about removing the
jumper and plugging straight into 220 V.
Can any expert out there confirm? Thank you in advance.
eMAC Monitor bootsup in "DIM" state

Hi,

I have a G4 eMAC 1Ghz OS X v10.2.8.

When our MAC is first booted, the screen isn't bright like normal. It
is in a dark dim state, similar to standby mode when left idling. The
only way to make it bright again is when we put the MAC to sleep
mode, and then reactivate the screen (ie return from sleep mode).
Once the screen brightens up and return from sleep mode, the mouse
arrow would freeze for a few secounds before it could move again.
Also, if the computer is left idling, it will go into the "dim mode"
again.

Is this a hardware or software problem that can be fixed with disk
utility? But we already tried rebuilding the desktop with Disk
Warrior 3.0.2 with no result. Does optimizing the HD help? But we
could not find that function in Diskwarrior 3.0.2. Thanks for your
support.
Just a note. Nearly ALL computer electronic problems are due to repeated
COLD starts. Componets are cold and are hit with a surge, not a problem
most of the time, but if something is weak, the cold start will cause
failure.

Help - filesharing causing sleep/wake problems

I have an eMac and iBook (both OS 10.2.6) linked with an ethernet
cable through a hub and have been filesharing between the two for over a
year without any glitches. Now, all of a sudden, I've started having
problems on the eMac when I wake it from sleep with filesharing on and
volumes mounted from the iBook.
I keep getting the spinning beachball when I try to open or close
apps. Sometimes force quitting gets me out of this temporarily but the
problem just happens again with the next app I launch. Usually I end up
having to do a regular or a hard restart, depending on how locked up the
system gets.
The eMac also takes a long time to go to sleep. Again, I get the
spinning beach ball until I click on the mouse and then sleep will
happen.
The iBook, which is set up identically to the eMac, exhibits
neither of these symptoms.
I can reliably eliminate the problem on the eMac by dismounting
the iBook volumes before putting it to sleep. In the past, I always left
these volumes mounted and experienced no problems.
I've also experienced some problems with the filesharing preference
panel on the eMac. At one point, it turned off the firewall (I connect
to the Internet via an Airport base station) and when I tried to turn it
on again, I got an error message saying that another firewall was
already running and I had to turn it off first. I'm not running any
other firewall program, unless Paranoid Android and DefaultApp count as
such.
I recently installed these programs to deal with the OSX security
hole, but I was running them for a couple of days before this sleep
problem cropped up on the eMac. Both programs are also installed on the
iBook, which does not exhibit any sleep problems.
I looked in the preferences folder to see if there was a
filesharing preference file I could trash but there doesn't seem to be
one. Nor could I find an energy saver preference file.
This has me really baffled. Any help would be much appreciated.
