Ipod charging question

I have a 40gb iPod bought for christmas.

When I charge it by mains plug it charges fine but when it is charged in the
dock it comes out with little/no power.

Anyone got any ideas why or how to combat/solve problem?

Cheers
I bought a Duracell AA AAA NiMH battery charger for my camera's
batteries. This charger has a USB port on it. Am I going to be OK
using it to charge my iPod? Are there specific things I need to look
for?
Thanks for any help.

Problem: battery replacement 2g iPod

Got the Newer Tech battery and tools. Had a helluva time opening the
case. But when I succeeded, ccording to instructions, back was supposed
to lift off. But it won't; it wants to take the controls and headphone
receptacle with it, as far as I can tell, and I'm not ready to force it
off.

Any suggestions? It came from OWC, but I didn't quickly find a place on
their site to raise the question.

The video on the site is aimed at 1G iPods although entry to the site
suggests it's good for both. The hard to read (2point type?) indicates
it's for 1g and 2g. Was there any difference in how the back comes off?

Is my iPod battery dead?

I've had a clickwheel 40GB model for about 18 months. It's
had moderate use and has never given any trouble.

Recently I let the battery totally discharge for about a month.
Now I can't get it to store any charge at all.

It will only start up when connected to the AC adapter. Then
the charging icon will animate but the battery doesn't actually store
any charge. If I go into diagnostic mode the 'RD BATT' always = 0.

If I connect it to my laptop I get the charging icon but it never
animates or charges. This means the battery has 0% charge.
It won't show up in itunes without some charge so I can't restore
it or whatever.

It looks like the battery is dead after 18 months. Is there anything
else I can try or whet are my options now?

Thank you.
Does using a USB flash drive help battery life?

Some people claim that puting commonly used files on a USB flash drive
while using a laptop will increase battery life due to the HDD being
used less. Is there really a difference and if so, how large is it?

If I am writing some crap in textedit I usually get 3 hours from my
battery. If I bought a USB flash drive, put textedit and the document on
the drive, how much extra battery life might I get?

If I bought an 8GB iPod nano and ran the OS, textedit and the crap I was
writing from the nano, would my battery last some absurd amount of time?

> From my experience, I rack my brains trying to fathom how it is
> *possible* that Apple has a reputation for the quality of its
> hardware. How can it be??? My MacBook has untold hardware problems,
> including falling into a deep sleep for not reason (requiring
> rebooting the machine to wake it up), and it periodically decides
> that the external drive I have connected to it is unreadable (again,
Of course, you are buying some of the first generation MacBooks before
letting them shake out the bugs, and might be an outlier pointing at an
Hi All,

I have a friend who was given an iPod mini a few weeks back. It appears the battery
is probably on its way out as he can only get to the menu screen before it shuts
off.

So...

How easy is it to replace the battery, or is it best left to an apple dealer /
reseller to do the job.?

Being that it was a freebie, he doesn't mind spending money on a battery.

TIA
Repairing an iPod Mini Battery under warranty

Can anyone offer me some advice on what to do next??

I've twice sent my iPod mini away for a battery replacement (three
months apart), and have twice had the iPod sent back stating "it does
not require service".

I've tested the iPod according to Apple's website (ie fully charging the
iPod, then turning off the backlight and pressing play on an album that
is set to repeat) and every time it last around 30 miniutes.

They refuse to fix it, and have twice changed me $19.95 shipping, as is
required when the iPod doesn't require service.

The iPod is about to run out of warranty on March 1....what the f*ck can
I do here???

I finally took the plunge and bought an ipod. I have been reading the
PCI USB 2.0 IOGear card & Sleep issues

I got it working with SLEEP but discovered an issue with the iPod.

I just installed a PCI USB 2.0 IOGear 5 port card in this G4 QuickSilver:

G4 933 2002 model
Tiger 10.4.2
1GB RAM
PCI SCSI card 2930CU

This G4 runs perfectly, and while I lost automatic DEEP SLEEP more than
a year ago (Jag or Panther not sure) it would manually go to SLEEP even
with the SCSI card.

On installing the IOGear card all seemed okay until I hooked up a 4thGen
iPod and even tho the iPod was dismounted (but still connected via the
IOGear USB 2.0 card) when I put the G4 to SLEEP manually the display
blanked but G4 remained on & running and did not SLEEP and worse, it
would not WAKE up & had to POWER Button 5 sec to get it OFF.

Subsequent experimenting it seems if iPod is connected mounted or
ejected but still connected via the PCI USB 2.0 IOGear card it will not
SLEEP & won't WAKE. Only way out is to POWER Button 5 sec route. Once
rebooted & removed iPod it WILL SLEEP & WAKE okay.

Obviously, I won't ever SLEEP this G4 with an iPod connected again.

Is this normal for IOGear or other PCI USB 2.0 cards?

=======
Main reason I put in the USB 2.0 card is I bought a 5th Gen iPod Video
for my daughter for Christmas (not opened yet or even checked it out
yet) and that iPod Video will sync ONLY via USB not Firewire as my older
4th Gen iPod would do.

Main music MP3 library is on this G4 mac so it seemed best to install a
USB 2.0 card in it.

I know some added hardware peripherals will not allow DEEP SLEEP. At
least this PCI card will work if no iPod is actually connected.

Thanks for comments in advance.

Hi,

I have an ipod mini that I bought in Mar'05. I only started using it
about two months ago. The battery life right now is absolutely
pathetic. Once I charge the battery all night, it lasts for about 45
mins the next day; its obnoxious! I contaced apple, and they said that
according to my one year warrant I will have to mail it to them, which
will cost me about $40, and they "recommend" that I purchase an
extended warranty for $59. I feel scammed.

I am sure this has happened to other people. What have you guys done
about it? What do you recommend?

Help much apprecitaed

Thanks,

ipod charging problem

when I plug my ipod mini in to charge via usb it does fine until I unplug
it. When I unplug it, it will sometimes continue to say its charging even
though I have taken out the charger. usually its supposed to when its done
charging and still plugged into the usb it will tell me when it is done
charging showing a lightning bolt next to the battery bar saying its
charged, and when I take out the charger from the ipod it will still say
charged even though I have taken the ipod away from the charger.
I also charge it sometimes for a long time but it will only last without
dying for 10 minutes, I then have to recharge it all over again and the same
thing might occur.

Thoughts? Is this the way batteries die?
iPod will not sleep

I keep trying, and my iPod (photo) refuses to sleep. Selecting the
Sleep menu item does nothing; neither does holding down play/pause. All
other functions are normal. How can I fix this?
iPod Photo 60gb won't wake up after being forced to sleep by holding play (hardware) button

I just upgraded my iPod with the 2005-06-26 (4.2). I was listening to
some podcasts and assumed they were causing this... but I don't think
that's true. If I let my iPod fall asleep (leave it in paused for a few
minutes) it wakes right up with a click of a button... BUT, when I
click and hold the play button to put it to sleep (functionality I
love(ed) along with click and hold the menu button to force on/off the
backlight)... it will not wake up until I reset the iPod (hold both the
menu and the back/middle buttons for like 6-ish seconds).

Anyone just start seeing this with this most recent iPod Updater?

Hi,

Does anyone know whether the iPod USB Charger works worlwide (i.e. it
is 110-240V)?

I cannot find the information anywhere including Apple's website.

Thanks in advance.
i bought a 512M ipod shuffle tonight, and when i installed drivers and
plugged it in, it didn't appear to charge.

by that, i mean that it just sat there in the USB port doing nothing.
No lights, nothing. At one point, it began flashing amber... i
understand that's its "pen drive" mode. in any case, i can transfer
files just fine. What i want to know is: is my USB drive powered(I know
that's a stupid question, but i've tried all my alternatives and have
pretty much run out of options)? Is the Ipod already fully charged? If
so, why isn't the green status light on? If not, why doesn't plugging
it in seem to do anything?

thanks
For electrical power, the only thing you need is a suitable plug adapter
for the physical plug design. The power supply handles different
voltages and line frequencies. Look at the label on the power adapter
and you will see (at least this is trued to the iBook. it is probably
trus for the iPod, though I have no direct experience).

You can get suitable plug adapters all kinds of places.
replaced 3G iPod battery....

Hi Y'all:
Just replaced the battery in my 3G iPod with one from Other World
Computing that wifey brought back from US. Not an experience I would
like to repeat: Cracking the case open was a real b*stard--the supplied
tools were pretty useless. Made of soft plastic so they won't mutilate
the case, but the tips break off inside the case--**that's** the point
of no return!
I think it took an hour of patient swearing to finally crack the case
open (with the aid of a small flat blade driver), the rest was easy. Had
to use a pair of pliers to bend the case back into shape :-((
A tip for anyone contemplating this: make sure the iPod is off and
**locked** so before snapping the case back together, ensure that the
lock switch is in the lock position.
I'll post later about whether it was worth it. I was getting about 3hrs
out of the standard battery.
Cheers,
Problems with IPOD mini battery :-((((

Hi

I have got a brand new ipod mini (the 4GB model) and it looks like I have
problems in battery recharge.
I took care in charging it completely the first time, as suggested.

Now, when I charge it, the battery charge indicator turns to "charged" after
a couple of hours. Nevertheless, after few minutes of run, the battery
charge indicator shows only a 20% level of battery charge left, despite it
keeps playing for few hours (say 3/4) before giving up.

The apple website states that the ipod requires roughly one houre to fully
charge when connected to a "high power" USB 2.0. I definitely have USB 2.0
plugs on my PC (an HP Pavilion zd8000EA) but how do I recognise if the USB
port is an "high power"?

Thanks in advance for your help

iPod Dead or Merely Sleeping?

I've got a second generation 10 Gb iPod. During the use of one of the
latest software updates, I glanced over at the screen, which said it
wanted or was able to be unplugged. I reached over and did so just as
the screen changed to 'don't unplug this iPod on pain of death' or
something.

Well, sure enough, it is dead.

When charged, it sounds like it is cycling through a boot sequence, you
can hear its little hard drive speeding up, hitting something that
elicits a 'touck' sound, then slowing down (how's this for cartalk-like
descriptive prose?!?).

Disk Utility SOMETIMES sees the little tyke, but mostly not, and can't
do anything with it when it does (like, reinitialize the thing)
Snortin' Norton Utilities does not nor does Disk Warrior.

I can't see my way into the casing, nor would i know what to do once
inside; and yes, i have tried the Vulcan death grip to reset it (toggle
lock, hold a couple of buttons), which in this case provokes a steaming
pile of diddlysquat.

So my dearest cognoscenti, illuminati, have you any ideas?

One option is to bring it to Montreal's new 'iPod Store' but seeing as
how Apple wanted $250 to change the battery direct through their
service department, I figure a third party joint wouldn't be cheap, nor
veer from the Apple policy not to fix things but to replace componentry
en-masse.

iPod battery question

Is it better for an iPod if I charge its battery whenever possible (I
use my iPod in my car, but I bring it into the house every night), or
should I let its charge run out completely before I charge it up again?
It's a brand new iPod photo, and I don't want its battery to get hosed
like my last iPod did.
