Is there a keyboard shortcut that can put this Mac Mini to sleep if I'm
not using an Apple keyboard? (I don't have an Eject key.)

Wake On LAN (WOL) on Mac Mini?

I cannot make WOL function on my new Mac Mini. I am using the wired
ethernet interface. I enabled System Preferences / Energy Saver / Options
/ "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access."

I used the old reliable perl script wakeonlan to send "magic packets"
to the Mac Mini. Lots of magic packets. The Mini kept sleeping. Moving
the mouse wakes it up immediately, so I know that it is not dead.

Is there anything else I can try?
Ext Sata Mini fan replacement Pics/Temps

Pictures here: http://tinyurl.com/2onlmd

Ambient temperature was about 60F or 16C.
Temps at Idle/Heavy Load/2 minutes after Heavy Load terminated.
CPU A 22/25/24
CPU A Temp Diode 26/39/30
CPU CORE 1 15/37/19
Northbridge Position 1 24/25/26
Northbridge Position 2 24/25/26
Hard drive 27/26/26

I'll do another reading with a more normal ambient temperature later.
Perhaps the CPU CORE 1 temp is off. I'll try some other programs that
use these sensors later as well. Temperature Monitor and Hardware
Monitor are both made by the same company but there are others. Any
recommendations would be most welcome.

Something interesting on their website here in the FAQ:
-----------------
http://www.bresink.com/osx/216202/Docs-en/faq.html
"I am running the program on an x86-based computer which has not been
manufactured by Apple. Only sensors for hard drives, batteries, and
Intel CPU monitoring are displayed, but no other values. Can you add
support for the other sensors of my mainboard?

This is only possible if the manufacturer of your system or your
mainboard develops a driver for the sensors that is compatible with
Mac OS X. Manufacturers can contact us for receiving more technical
information."
-----------------
Now this program is for OS X. Here they are dispensing information to
people running it on non-Apple hardware. That's the first time I've
seen OSx86 hacker people acknowledged on a mainstream website. Or
perhaps its another reason not to bother expending all that time when
you can get the Mini up to 3 gbs ram, 1 TB Sata2 storage, not to
mention CPU upgrading when the price is attractive. ...:)

Mac Mini ('07 Intel Core 2 Duo 1.87) HTPC will "display sleep" during VLC session

JR

I ran the test you've recommended. I noticed that when the system
"rewakes" I get more page ins than I do page outs. Page outs is also
pretty constant during this time at zero. My memory usage is like
this during the rewaking period: 200+MB inactive and 40MB free. After
rewaking is complete, here are the stats: 228M wired, 298M active,
129M inactive, 656M used, 367M free.

I only keep: Vine Server, Azureus, Hamachi, Quicksilver, iTunes, and
VLC on all the time, so I don't think memory is the issue. It comes
off like the screen falls asleep (cause I set the display sleep to 15
minutes), but if things like iTunes visualizer, VLC, front row are on,
it prevents the screen from sleeping.

I have these energy settings: sleep: never | display: 10m | put hd to
sleep when possible: check (but I've tried, with and without and no
difference).

Weird right? I've also tried things like Jiggler, but it doesn't kick
in if the default option: jiggle when computer is idle is selected.
Apparently running VLC and not touching the mouse or keyboard is not
idle.

Power down Mac Mini

I use an Intel Mac Mini with a bus powered HD as a music centre.

It all works fine, but powering down is a bind, having to switch the TV
back on, 'backing out' of Front Row, and using a mouse or kb to prompt
shut down. I realise the remote can sleep the Mini, but the HD stays on.

Being a bit of a lazy sod, I recently taken to pressing the power button
for a few seconds instead of going through the above. Does this do any harm?

Thanks
Mac Mini heat sink upgrading?

Has anyone heard of someone changing the heat sink on their Mini? My
PPC 1.25 ghz model would need a heat sink not exceeding 47 mm x 118
mm. (47 mm is about 1.5 inches.) A Sonic Tower might work if one
ground the 2 of the sides but it would be great to get a good one that
might fit (with some retrofitting of course to mount it).

mini - power adapter

I'v got PPC mac mini with dying power adapter. Will power adapter from
Intel based mini will work with my mac? Obviously more power won't
hurt, but I wouldn't be surprised if connectors would have been
incompatibile.
I'm also consedering buying power adapter designed for a notebook but
I'm not sure how to connect a cord. I see 3 wires and a ground. Looks
like red is +18.5V and black and gray are almoust the same as ground
(there's 0V when connected but not 0 resistance when disconnected).
But i'v measured a broken adapter and I'm not sure if it's safe to
simply connect ground, gray and black.
And the last question. I'v read that even 12V will work. Does anybody
tried power with less than 18.5V (how much less?) with big load with
no problems?

My Mac Mini, version OSX 10.4.9, refuses to shut down correctly. The monitor
displays a grey screen telling me I must switch off the Mini using the power
button. I humbly obey but, when I switch on again, an annoying message tells
me that the damned thing shut down unexpectedly. A minor and trivial niggle,
I'm sure, but is there anything I can do to sort it?

Mini goes in coma, won' wake. Help.

Remember a few days ago I posted about new Mini with Tiger 'freezing' so
that the mouse would move but no click would be hear nor any key-press
response?

Last night Mail was the only application running (all night).

Happened again. I came down this morning, moved mouse to wake up
monitor... which woke up but nothing worked. I clicked on Mail and a few
other things. Nada!

This time I pressed he power-button for half a second. Things I had
PREVIOUSLY CLICKED on came up for a few seconds and screen went black. I
waited for 15 or so seconds and the monitor light just blinked. I
pressed the button on back again for a half sec. and in a few seconds up
came the screen (with all the apps I had clicked) and all is well.

I have this machine set for CPU to never sleep, for monitor to sleep
after about an hour, for screen-saver after 15 minutes, and for he hard
disk to sleep if possible. There is some kind of power-management issue
going on here, right?

Anyone have any idea what might be happening? Is the HD not waking up?
Second time this happened and this time the machine had only been
running a bit longer than 24 hours... via uptime command:
7:52 up 1 day, 7:39, 2 users, load averages: 0.05 0.05 0.00

What should I try next. Un-checking the hard-disk sleep? Or never
letting the monitor sleep?

What's goin' on?

Mac Mini cooling fan

> Lately my Mac Mini's cooling fan seems to be increasing in speed as the
> computer seems to be more at rest. I have a couple of applications
> idling, and yet the computer sounds like it's thinking really hard.
> Once I start engaging it in tasks, the fan slows down. i would expect
> the opposite to be happening. Any ideas what's going on?

Can't comment on the above but since the bottom of the Mini is a heatpad
and there is a thermal pad conducting heat from the motherboard to the
bottom, it would make sense, I think, to raise the bottom off the
mounting surface a bit. I've raised mine about 1/3 of an inch. Then I
tried running it on its side. That seems to work well. Also tried
running it on its end which should be the best way. Lots of ventilation
to the bottom and the fan pushes the heat up. Make sure you anchor it
so it doesn't get knocked over when on.

Questions about Mac Mini-How much power do I need?

I was earlier looking at a MacBook Pro for my son. The problem is the
cost was higher than we wanted and we later realized he didn't need
the portability since he has a computer in his classroom. He lives in
a dorm and we're worried about theft. A laptop is just so easy to
steal and with a desktop it can be more easily secured.
Anyway, this takes us to which one to get. I know there's a Mac Pro or
something like that that is a 2 chip dual core system for $2400 or so.
That's more than we want. It seems that leaves me with the mac mini
or the imac. Honestly I have to say both me and my wife kind of got
hooked on the mac after seeing our son use it and since we both are
heavily into graphics work we're thinking it may be worth switching
from Windows to Mac. The thing is because we have Windows PC's which
we have so much software for we will use both the Windows and Mac's at
the same time. We decided to stay away from the boot camp windows/mac
option at this time. The Mac Mini seems like a cheap solution,
especially considering for $70 we can get a keyboard/mouse combo and
then just use the 19 inch LCD monitors we already have. The Mac Mini
is nice and compact. I like the power of the imac more but with the
monitors and computers we have we really don't want to deal with th
etwo monitors and I'm sure you can't buy a imac and then sell the
monitor since it's built into one unit.
I guess one of my questions, if we get a mac mini we'd go with the
dual core option which is 1.66 ghz. is this enough power? It seems
I'd want closer to 2.0ghz. most of the software will be the Office
Suite, Adobe Suite and the Macromedia Suite for uses such as email,
internet browsing, word processing, some desktop publishing, graphic
editing, web page development, and even some editing of digital video
so I know I need power. Is 1.66ghz dual core enough? That's my only
concern. how much ram would I need? I know it comes with 512 and
I'd upgrade it to at least 1 gig if not 2 gigs. As for hard drive
space, I'd likely take the 80 gig to at least 100 if not 120 gigs.
Like I said I know the imac would have more power but it wouldn't work
well in the situation I have.
That leads me to another question. I know some of these options are
cheaper if done outside of Apple such as buying it with 512megs and
then buying the memory on my own. What type of memory do I have to
buy for the mac mini? Also, how hard is it to upgrade the hard drive.
I was wondering if it's possible to get the 80 gig version and then
buy a 120 gig separately and then set it up for the mac. Are the
applications/restore DVD's included and is it easy to set up the new
hard drive or is this a hard procedure?
Next, I know these intel macs are new but are there any new macs comin
out just around the corner? I just like the idea of the mac mini but
want more power. Is it in any way possible to upgrade the CPU in the
mac mini? I know this is a lot of upgrades but I've done a lot of work
with PC's including building my own. of course this is PC, not Mac
but I'm familiar with computer hardware.
Also, me and my wife have to travel on business frequently. Has
anyone used a mac mini as a portable? It's so small that it seems it
could be taken in a small carry bag with a portable sized mouse and
keyboard. Is the mac mini capable of handling the jolts of traveling
though? For use outside of a hotel room are there power options with
a battery that would supply power to it? I have a adaptor for my
laptop that takes the vga output and puts it onto standard rca plugs
for a TV.
Since we are getting potentially 3 machines other than educational
discounts does anyone sell in volume discounts?
I know this is many questions. This is a whole new frontier for me
but I feel with timeI may be using the mac more than 50% of the time.
This is just all so new to me and thanks for all the help.

Does Apple Remote Desktop work when monitor is asleep?

Does Apple Remote Desktop work when monitor is asleep? I set up a
router and a Mac Mini at a location far from home. The Mini is running
OSX 10.4 and ARD3 with VNC. While still at that location, I verified
that the Mini accepted VNC connections from outside the router (I set
up port forwarding on the router, of course, and VNC-ed into it from
outside the router). Now that I'm back home I can no longer VNC into
the Mac. It says "connection failed." The only thing I can think of is
that on the Mini the energy saver feature turned off the monitor. Is
there any chance that this would affect ARD or VNC?

Thanks.
Help needed please. Mac mini doesn't power up

Hi,

This I bought an APC usb 2.0 hub, plugged it in in the mini usb port and
inserted 2 usb printers, 1 external hd and a wireless keyboard and mouse in
the hub. Everything worked fine and instead of shutting down the Mac mini I
used the sleep mode.
After dinner I wanted to wake it up but couldn't. I tried to force shut it
by holding the power button for 10 seconds but nothing happened. I removed
the power supply adapter and noticed that therre still seemed to be some
current as the sleep mode light continued flasing for another 20 seconds.
Once it was off I let it stand for over a minute and then reconnected the
power supply and pressed the power button but nothing happens.
Unfortunately the warranty expired 2 months ago.

I would appreciate it if anyone has an idea as to what could have happened.

Thanks a lot,
Sleepy Mini

I have a mac mini that freaks out and goes to sleep usually when I'm
viewing media or ripping a CD in iTunes. Anyone seen anything like this
before? At first, I get the rev of the fan, like a kernel panic, but
then it goes to sleep, and I have to hit the spacebar to awaken it.
I've tried re-setting the PIM, turning off all sleep options, and it
still happens.

I'll run hardware test, but in the interim, any insight would be
appreciated.

phone line wakes Mac Mini

I've discovered with with the keyboard and mouse unplugged, I can wake
my Mac Mini by picking up the telephone. When I hang up, the computer
wakes up.

If I find my computer awake when I come home, I suppose it's because my
phone rang in the last few minutes.

Are all Mac Minis like that? Should I disconnect the phone line when I
leave? That would keep it from waking up and provide lightning protection.

Hi All,

I have a friend who was given an iPod mini a few weeks back. It appears the battery
is probably on its way out as he can only get to the menu screen before it shuts
off.

So...

How easy is it to replace the battery, or is it best left to an apple dealer /
reseller to do the job.?

Being that it was a freebie, he doesn't mind spending money on a battery.

TIA
The display of my Mac Mini goes to sleep after ten idle minutes, e.g.
when I download. If I intend to leave the computer idle, I put it to
sleep.

Sometimes the display is awake when I return half an hour after putting
the computer to sleep. What wakes it up? Does Tiger keep a log of such
Mac mini power consumption

Anyone have experiences with power consumption on the various Mac mini
models? Numbers in watt or amps, temps...

I'm considering using a mini, using a 7200rpm disk and 1GB ram, as a
home server and partly workstation (reading mail/news nad browsing).
It'll run dns/dhcp/mailserver/samba/http, house my documentation, mail
and such..

Since it'll run 24/7, and electricity is not for free, I'm looking for
somthing powpower/lownoise, while also taking up little space.
I'm a bit worried about temps, mostly for the sake of keeping the disk
at sufficient low temps, hence cpu temps/power has special interest.

Kind regards,
Repairing an iPod Mini Battery under warranty

Can anyone offer me some advice on what to do next??

I've twice sent my iPod mini away for a battery replacement (three
months apart), and have twice had the iPod sent back stating "it does
not require service".

I've tested the iPod according to Apple's website (ie fully charging the
iPod, then turning off the backlight and pressing play on an album that
is set to repeat) and every time it last around 30 miniutes.

They refuse to fix it, and have twice changed me $19.95 shipping, as is
required when the iPod doesn't require service.

The iPod is about to run out of warranty on March 1....what the f*ck can
I do here???

TIA
Making a Mini stay on.....

Hi all,

How does one set up a Mac Mini to boot on the application of AC power?
In other works, to restart itself after a power outage.

I expected to find something in hardware preferences, but didn't
recognize anything. Mac Help searched forever on the keyword "power"
and found nothing useful. (it's still looking!)

This has to be simple, thanks for any help.
Problems with IPOD mini battery :-((((

Hi

I have got a brand new ipod mini (the 4GB model) and it looks like I have
problems in battery recharge.
I took care in charging it completely the first time, as suggested.

Now, when I charge it, the battery charge indicator turns to "charged" after
a couple of hours. Nevertheless, after few minutes of run, the battery
charge indicator shows only a 20% level of battery charge left, despite it
keeps playing for few hours (say 3/4) before giving up.

The apple website states that the ipod requires roughly one houre to fully
charge when connected to a "high power" USB 2.0. I definitely have USB 2.0
plugs on my PC (an HP Pavilion zd8000EA) but how do I recognise if the USB
port is an "high power"?

Thanks in advance for your help
This all started after I installed my Epson-2200 via usb. Thinking that it
may be related I unplugged the keyboard. The only thing I have plugged into
the usb ports is a keyboard and mouse. Anyone have any idea on what I may
