Reconnecting on wake from sleep

Being a total newbie at these things, I'm rather proud of having got my
Airportless mini (running Panther) set up with a Netgear USB wireless
adapter and the Realtek driver. But the mini tends to drop the
connection when it wakes from sleep. (I expect it dropped the connection
when it *went* to sleep, but you know what I mean.) I can re-establish
the connection by physically disconnecting the adapter and reconnecting
it. But is there a way of doing this virtually, via the keyboard? I
mean, of course there is, but could someone please tell me what it is?

G5 Roars Out of Control

I'm running a PowerMac G5 under OS 10.3.9. The unit works normally
most of the time, but I will occasionally find it first thing in the
morning roaring full blast, with the hard drive and/or fan just
spinning continuously at full speed and making quite a racket.
Stopping it requires a reboot. If anyone has any counsel on solving
this problem, I'd be very much obliged. Email reply preferred, many

I hate it when there are irreproducible faults, although in this case I
guess it's better than a permanent serious one. I went to wake up my
Powerbook G4 (running 10.4.something), which I have set to require a
password to wake from sleep. I enter my password and it tells me wrong name
or password. OK, must have mistyped (that first character getting lost
sometimes thing maybe.) Didn't work. Tried a couple of more times, typing
very slowly. No joy. Eventually got the "failed too many times" error.
OK, I have a couple of other accounts on the machine, so I told it to switch
users and tried a different one. Same problem -- wouldn't take the password
and eventually got the "too many times" error. Wondering how I'm going to
recover from this (envisioning I'm going to have to find my master password)
I shut it down by pressing and holding the power switch -- at least that
worked! Restarted and everything's fine. Go figure.

MBP battery performance in Leopard?

Anyone else noticed significantly worse battery performance since

Closed Lid Operation

All,

I generally use my laptop (15" MBP 2.4GHz, 4Gb, 200Gb) as a desktop
replacement. I have an older 23" apple cinema display (acrylic) and a
standard aluminum keyboard and wireless mighty mouse. Since I upgraded
to Leopard I can no longer simply hookup my power, DVI, and usb to
reliably boot with the lid closed. 90+ percent of the time, I end up
with the dispaly on the MBP turning on, going through the "gear"
screen with the Apple log, and then kernel panic. If I leave the lid
up, it boots into dual screen mode. Afterwards if I put the machine to
sleep, close the lid, and hit the keyboard to wake up, the laptop
display comes on and the external monitor powers back up with a black
screen and sits there until it goes back to sleep. If I move the mouse
over to the 2nd display, it appears as the beach ball of death.

I have run through removing all usb devices, using different keyboard/
mouse combinations, no firewire conected, and most other combinations
of only a mouse, keyboard and display connected. I have also reset the
SMC module, and so far the only thing to make this work reliably is to
boot my old 10.4.11 image.

This is a quite frustrating, any thoughts/suggestions?

Battery Life and Leopard

I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed a drop in battery life
with leopard installed. I have an original core duo macbook so the
battery is aging anyway and im wondering if im imagining a sudden drop
in life after installing leopard or wether the battery is just on its
way out.

Powerbook G4 - kernel panic on sleep

It's happy to go to sleep IF it triggers this itself; but if I close
the lid - or select 'sleep' - it almost immediately throws a kernel
panic. This is NOT happening when it wakes up - it's before it actually
sleeps... except when it chooses to sleep itself!

Anyone any ideas? Please?

At shutdown all programs quit, desktop clears off like it shoud, and
the little circle thingy starts working.

and working, and working, and working but machine won't shut off without
pushing the power button.

sync before sleep

Hi,

... can anybody tell me whether Mac OS (Leopard) does a sync before I
send it to sleep? I ask because the Time Machine disk may potentially
get disconnected during the sleep period. I know this is generally not
a good idea but I want to know if I have to definitely unmount it
first. I know that it probably complains about a disk being removed but
not unmounted first after waking it up again but if it's sync'ed then
this shouldn't be much of a problem.

Sending the Mac to sleep and waking it up with the disk mounted is not
a problem. I've tried that and it doesn't complain and everything seems
to be fine so far.

So what if the disk is removed during the sleep period?

Sleep weirdness

I have a client running 10.3.9 on a G5 iMac (no iSight). Every time
the iMac goes to sleep, it won't wake up. When you tap the spacebar
(or any other key or the mouse) the iMac shuts down instead of waking
up. It powers up fine, all the diagnostic LED's are lit. I did a
preference-ectomy, zapped PRAM repaired permissions, all to no avail.
I even created a new, virgin user account, which behaved exactly the
same. Has anyone run across this? Is there a solution short of erase
and install?

Wake up problems in Leopard again

I went to the Apple site to see what wa there in regard to wake up failures
on my G4. Iam far from alone. There have been about 100 posts on the
subject--all very similar. It is not just a G4 that is the problem.

With the computer in the sleep mode, pressing any key should wake it up.
That is not always the case. After fiddling around, I am convinced that it
is a software problem. Pressing a key does indeed get picked up b the
computer. The fan turns on, the mouse lights but the keyboard gets
disconnected. That is, after then initial activity to wake up starts, the
keyboard is not served by whatever USB should do. This does not happen every
time the computer goes to sleep.

What does it take to get Apple's attention. I looks like Apple expects their
customers to provide the technical support Apple should.

This is a corrected (I hope) and supplemented repeat of a previous post. I
apologize for what seems my growing ineptitude.

Only sometimes, my G4 running Leopard 10.5.1 (and original 10.5.0) does not
wake up properly. I am using a USB Apple keyboard with a Macally mouse
plugged into the keyboard.

When I press a key, the mouse lights up but I have no control from the
keyboard or the mouse. The screen remains dark. The pilot light in the power
button does not vary in intensity as it does during normal sleep.

The caps lock key does not light up when pressed.

If I unplug the mouse from the keyboard or unplug the keyboard and replug,
the mouse light does not turn on.

There is power on the USB cable that I use because I can light up USB
powered speakers. That power is not available during normal sleep.

If I press the power button long enough to turn off the computer and reboot,
everything seems to be OK.

I had the same problem just before posting this supplement. I confirmed that
the pilot lamp was brightening and dimming on about a five second cycle
while computer was asleep. I pressed the caps lock key once. The pilot light
steadied. The mouse lit up brightly and then went to its standby intensity.
I heard the fan in the computer start up again. It was deja vu all over
again. There was no control from the keyboard and the screen was dark.

I conclude that there is something going on in Leopard that keeps USB
devices from being serviced correctly. What can that be? How can that be
corrected?

iMac won't stay asleep.

Hi all,
Since installing Leopard, my aluminium imac won't stay asleep. Sometimes
it wakes up instantly, and sometimes it wakes up after about 10 minutes. The
culprit seems to be my Apple bluetooth keyboard. The iMac is set to allow
bluetooth devices to wake it. When I sleep the mac, the keyboard goes into a
low power mode which then wakes the mac. If I use a wired keyboard the mac
will sleep normally. If I turn the bluetooth keyboard off before sleeping
the mac, it behaves normally.

Mac doesn't wake up from keyboard

Since installing Leopard my Mac Pro seems less interesting in waking
up from sleep. It used to be that the first press of mouse or keyboard
would do it, but for the last two days it seems to ignore this, and
only a press of the front-panel power button will do it.

Is there a new pref for this somewhere? Anyone else seeing this?

MacBook Pro spontaneously wakes from sleep after upgrading to Leopard?

For some reason, after I upgraded to Leopard, then whenever I put my
MacBook Pro to sleep, it spontaneously wakes up after some time (can
be from a few minutes to an hour or two.) I don't know why this is
happening, but I know for sure that it's related to Leopard since I
put my laptop to sleep every night (it's in my bedroom) and after
upgrading to Leopard, it started to just wake up a short while after
putting it to sleep.

At first I thought it could be Time Machine, so I disconnected all my
external drives, but that didn't seem to work.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

iMac shuts down for no reason

Hi all,

My iMac G5 (10.4.10) keeps on turning off for no reason. I'll walk away
from the computer, come back an hour later, and it'll be shut down. It
almost always happens when I'm not using it, for whatever that's worth.

About 2 years ago, the same computer would shut down every time it went
to sleep. Apple replaced the power supply and that solved the problem.

This time, there doesn't seem to be any connection to sleep mode. I've
left it asleep overnight, and it's still been on in the morning. On the
other hand, I know it's shut down minutes after I walked away from it,
when it was still awake.

I've run disk repair and the hardware test since this started happening,
and both showed no problems.

Does anyone have any thoughts about what this might be? Is there
anything on the computer that I can check for clues (logs or anything
like that)?

17" MacBook Pro Battery

My 17" MacBook Pro Battery has swelled to over double its original
thickness. The system is 18mths old.
I am running 10.4.10 and have always kept the updates current.
Has anyone else had these problems? Are they the same issues as for the
recall on the 15" machines?

Hi.

Running Mac OS X 10.4.10 on a MacBook Pro 15" (Intel Core Duo)...

When running off the battery: At 40% remaining, the machine goes
black and shuts down completely. There's no warning or low battery
alert. The computer is *not* asleep; a hard reboot is necessary to
bring it back to life.

We have attempted to condition the battery by putting the Mac into
sleep mode until there's no more juice, and then completely recharging
the battery. Despite this, the problem persists.

Does this mean that we need a new battery? Or is something else going
on here?

fan won't stop

My Macbook Pro 2.2 core 2 duo has been great until I did the latest Pro
Application Support update. Now the computer runs generally hotter than
it did before and the fan runs non-stop. Running 10.4.10.

Rebooted, reset the SMU, repaired permissions - no change.

Any suggestions?

G3 iMac and Battery

500 mhz G3 iMac. OSX 103.9. The date and time were not holding. I
checked the battery, although installed correctly, it was dead. I
replaced the battery with a new one that checked out at 3.6 volts. The
iMac refused to bootup! I scratched my head, and on a whim, I installed
the new battery opposite from the correct position. The computer now
starts and runs fine, but it doesn't hold the date and time again. The
+ and - battery terminal positions are displayed prominently on the
board holder. And as I said above, I know the old battery was installed
correctly.

Any ideas?

Won't Shut Down! - iMac 800 G3 - TIGER OS X.4

Hello,
I have an iMac 800 G3 17" flowerpot.... 768MB RAM... and I just
installed Tiger OS X.4.1 ... and now it won't shut down.

It runs beautifully... but just hangs on shut down.

It will even go to sleep after 15 mins during shut-down, and wake up....
but it never, never fully shuts down... just hangs at the blue-screen.

What can I do to fix this?

Battery Problem, MacBookPro

Behavior is the following.
I work with the battery connected, at 99%.
When I disconnect and work outside, very soon the
computer shuts down as if the battery was low, even
if it is at 70%. I need to reconnect the battery,
which charges up to 99%.
It is an Apple refurbished machine.

External Philips harddisk goes to sleep

Hi -

here are 2 external harddisks for backup purposes. The one from
LaCie runs fine but not the one from Philips.

PSyncX works like this:

1) Scanning Destination Directory

2) Scanning Source Item (and here the Philips harddisk goes to sleep)

3) copying items (this doesn't wake up the harddisk)

The Philips customer service is not interested.

I searched the archives but using the keywords

"external harddisk usb sleep"

didn't yield anything useful.

One could build an Applescript to touch the harddisk every minute,
but perhaps there is an easier way?

10.4.9 is told to solve some USB problems - not this one,-)

In the System preferences>Energy saving I didn't mark "Put the harddisk(s)
to sleep when possible"*

*The expression may be not exactly translated from my German system.

Power Mac won't stay asleep

Running Mac OS X (10.2.6) on a Power Mac G4 1GHz (FW800) since February,
and suddenly since the other day I've had trouble keeping it asleep.

I'll put it to sleep, and come back some hours later and it's awake
again.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Could it be an app? I tend to have a couple web browsers open, Mail,
iChat, iTunes, iCal, Address Book, Stickies, Suitcase, and Word open
pretty constantly. (But, then again, I always have, and the problem just
started.)
